The Nitrate Color Slider is a free web tool that replaces the printed color chart included with our on-site nitrate test kits. Simply slide the lever to match the color of your test result — no download, no guesswork, no printed chart needed. Why nitrate levels matter for your operation

Forage plants take up excess nitrate during drought, and levels can accumulate to toxic concentrations for livestock — causing slow growth, low birth weight, decreased milk production, and even death. Accurate, timely testing is essential.

The USDA's Small Business Innovation Research program funded NECi to develop kits specifically for wet and dry forages:

  • Choose the Green Forage kit for silage, green chop, or standing hay — if you can squeeze out a few drops of sap, this is the kit for you.
  • Choose the Dry Forage kit for hay, wheat stalks, or anything dry. You'll need a blender to prepare your material.
