Rapid, Reliable Hydrogen Peroxide Removal
What Is Catalase?

Catalase is an enzyme that rapidly breaks down hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) into water and oxygen. Hydrogen peroxide is commonly used in research, industrial, and medical processes as an oxidant, disinfectant, or preservative, but residual peroxide can interfere with analytical measurements, damage biological samples, or disrupt downstream processes.
Catalase provides a fast, selective, and non-hazardous way to eliminate hydrogen peroxide without introducing additional chemicals or byproducts. Catalase is used in many different ways but here are a few common uses:
- Analytical laboratories – quenching residual hydrogen peroxide prior to enzymatic or colorimetric assays
- Water and environmental testing – neutralizing peroxide used in treatment or disinfection steps
- Biological and industrial processes – protecting enzymes, microbes, and sensitive materials from oxidative damage
- Process cleanup – simplifying peroxide removal before discharge or reuse
The reaction is rapid and clean, producing only water and oxygen.
Wild-Source vs Recombinant Catalase: Why It Matters
Catalase is widely available and often sold at low cost when sourced from animal tissue (such as bovine liver) or non-recombinant microbial fermentations. While these options may be suitable for some basic applications, they come with important limitations that can affect performance, consistency, and reliability.
Limitations of Wild-Source Catalase
-
Variable activity
Enzymes extracted from biological tissues or mixed cultures often show significant lot-to-lot variation, making reproducibility difficult. -
Lower purity
Wild-source preparations may contain other trace proteins, enzymes, metals, or components that interfere with sensitive analytical or enzymatic workflows. -
Animal-derived materials
Bovine-sourced catalase raises concerns around traceability, regulatory acceptance, ethical extraction, and long-term supply stability. -
Limited process control
Native enzymes cannot be optimized for stability, pH range, or temperature tolerance.
So while wild type catalase may seem to have a lower upfront cost, it comes at the expense of reliability and performance.
Advantages of Recombinant Catalase
Our catalase is produced using recombinant expression, which means you get a higher quality, more reliable enzyme, that you can depend on in your operations.
- Consistent, predictable activity across batches (lot-to-lot tracking)
- High purity with reduced risk of assay interference
- Non-animal sourced, improving regulatory confidence and sustainability
- Reliable, scalable supply
- Greater stability and performance control
